Hi, this is Jennifer here with City Farmhouse Antiques and I am wanting to share with you this week’s find of the week. This week I am going to be talking about black ephemera. That is a difficult word for me to get out, or what we call “Black Americana”. These are collectibles that you see that were made in the 18th and 19th centuries.  A lot of pieces were produced like these back in the 1900’s like 1900 to 1950.  These pieces were actually produced by the Fiedler & Fiedler Mold and Die Company.  On the bottom it will show the F & F if you can see it there.  They were made in the United States.  There are negatives and positives in everything.  Some people don’t believe in collecting these pieces.  Some would say it is terrible and very derogatory.  I am of the other side.  I believe that if we ignore our history it could be repeated and I feel it is respectful to those that lived during that period to recognize that it did exist. A lot of people collect these pieces for that reason.  Because there are so many avid and famous collectors here in the U.S the prices have been driven up.  These pieces are relatively rare. Whenever I come across pieces like this I do tend to buy them because there are so many collectors. Of course there are a lot of types of “negative” pieces that can be collected of black ephemera as well as pieces like this of Aunt Jemimah who has a motherly and jovial connotation.  This is actually a cookie jar. It is plastic. The top comes off of the cookie jar. You can see she has a repair on the side.  These are collected enough that people take the time to repair them.  This one is actually in really good condition even with the repair.  You can see there are no holes or anything.  Sometimes you will find holes or cracks on the seams because they are plastic. Here you can see the set of six spice jars which are also really cute.  They would have come with a spice rack.  Unfortunately, I don’t have the spice rack to show you. Here are the salt and pepper shakers which I think are really cute too.  You can see the holes in the top. Because so many people collect Black Americana I never pass up the opportunity to pick up pieces like these.
